A Letter To Those Who Are Lost

It’s easy to get lost in the whirlwind of being swept off our feet by life for the first time. And it’s ok to feel lost in that darkness of the storm, being in the dark is an unavoidable part of life. Along with the darkness of the storm is confusion. There will always be times when we don’t know, times when we need to give the answer time to make itself known. But whether it’s taking immediate action, or finding stillness until the storm passes, what we do with that time will determine how long we suffer, and how high we rise again.

If you’re lost in the storm and anxiety is looming, think about this: Anxiety can come from the fear of not knowing, and, in a roundabout way, a lack of trust in our own ability to handle what is coming. This fear of what is coming is us disconnecting from our enoughness.

Dearest friend, when anxiety swells and obscures your ability to see, remember that on the other side of the dark, is the light, that the sun also, always rises on time, and so will you.

If you’re doubting your strength and resolve, if you’re questioning your ability to cope hear this: You know how. You know how to take care of yourself. You know what you need. You know how to be strong and how to be soft. You know how to take care of yourself. You know how I know? You got this far, you figured out what wasn’t working, you started looking for things that will.

You know how to take care of yourself, but you don’t have to go it alone.

If you’re feeling lethargic or burnt out, look closer. Sometimes, a lack of motivation or when you’re giving it your all and getting no results can mean a lack of alignment. It can mean that one of the doors you are trying to open, is not your door. The good news? Your internal communication center is working! Something inside of you is trying to get your attention, are you listening?

If you’re thinking it has come time to settle, if you’re ready to throw in the towel on your dreams, think about why you got started: You want a life that lights you up like the northern lights. You want to be grounded and present. You want to be open to the experiences and people that are right in front of you, not burning the candle at both ends. You want to know who you are and you want to be able to trust in the compass of your own heart. You want to guide your own way and feel amazing doing it. You want to fuel your body with sweet words and healing foods and feel all of life’s pleasures in the deepest places of your soul. And you want that to start now before life comes along and threatens to stir you all up again because it will.

If you’re thinking you don’t deserve all that ecstasy, think again. But if you’re waiting for someone to hand you the answer, stop waiting. If you want to feel worthy again, worthy of the love and care and attention that you give to everything else in your life, say this: I am worthy, I am worthy, I am worthy, I am worthy. Put your hand on your heart and remember that you know who you are and what you need. Remember that you can get yourself through anything. Feel the beat of your heart and remember. You are not alone. You are worthy. You are here. You are shining. You are able. You know how.

What is your favorite thing to do? A long walk outdoors? An afternoon with a book? Journaling? Smiling with your best friend? Whatever it is, do it. And then, allow some “empty” into your day and listen for what your heart wants.

If you’re thinking you just want to get back to feeling like your old self again, forget about it. Does the oak tree ever wish it could return to a seed? Does the sunflower stuff herself back down into her roots? You are growing and shining and learning and sharing more of your love with the world every day; do not wish for that to stop. You needed all the lessons of your past, you needed strong roots but now, break the chains of your limiting thoughts that limit you to those roots and watch the rest of you bloom.

What do you already do that lights you up? What would your perfect day be? Tomorrow, do one of the things that lights you up and, as best you can, live your perfect day or live a day of following your heart and your spontaneous states of energy and rest and know this: that is the perfect day too. That kind of day will give space for your feelings to be heard, will allow you to see the parts of yourself that are begging to be seen, that are waving to you “come over here, try this out, we’ll help you find yourself, we’ve been here all along!”

And lastly, never ever ever give up your self-care but define what it means to you and don’t be afraid to adjust it. Self-care is your relationship with yourself. It also mirrors our relationship with our life and the people in it. When we start to de-prioritize our own self-care, for the sake of our careers, friendships, and relationships, we’re inevitably just one step away from the spontaneous combustion of the life we’ve worked so hard to build.

Don’t give yourself up for your job or your degree or your relationship.

Remember that in order to show up as your best self for the things that you love, you must first show up for yourself.

Dearest friend, if you’ve gotten this far, there is only one thing left to do: start. Your life is happening right now. Right now, is yours for the taking. Not next year or next month. Not next week or tomorrow. Right now. So get after it. Get after the adventures, get after the work, get after the love. Get after everything that you want in every way that you can. Your life, storm or no storm, is happening right now. And ain’t nobody gonna live it for you.
